Job Description
Edyt (Founded 2006) is an Oakland, California web software startup funded by the US National Science Foundation (NSF) to help inventors participate in the patent application process. Currently Edyt has personnel in the US, Netherlands, and Poland and is deploying its product at the European Patent Organization (EPO), where examiners will use it as their primary software. Over the next few years, we’ll extend the software with increasingly challenging document analysis, communication generation, and collaboration capabilities, while branching out to other industries.
Edyt is a good place if you’re interested in how computers can assist humans collaboratively edit, annotate and review complex documents. Patent documents describe inventions at the frontiers of science, so our analysis and annotation tools must support just about every content type one could imagine including mathematical formulae, chemical structures, tabular data, waveforms, audio, videos, etc. Dealing with just one of these content types (e.g. chemical structures) is the basis for entire companies (e.g. ChemAxon), so there are multiple careers of technical challenges ahead.
We’re setting up a research lab (Edyt Labs) in Budapest to focus on long-term challenges. Initially, this may be six folks and grow over time. We’d prefer to first hire the team lead so this person can shape the rest of the team. If you are not the lead but would like to be part of the team, would you be interested in helping us find the lead?
Requirements
- Deep commitment to software demonstrated by at least one of following (contact us if you have non-traditional credentials): software-related Ph.D, individual contributor on commercial project, or open-source project maintainer.
- Proficiently read and discuss code issues across the full web development stack (we use Angular2 and Java atop Linux and SQL)
- Quickly learn new technologies and new subject matter (e.g. the patent grant process)
- Extreme problem-solving skill
- Self-managed individuals who are intrinsically motivated by the work
- English written and verbal fluency
- Interest in a long-term career
- Ideally, you’re networked with other developers you can enlist. We’d happily consider a group of devs who work well together.
Responsibilities
- Learn user experience (UX) requirements from Product
- Research technologies/approaches
- Discuss/debate technical approaches with Product, which may result in changes to requirements.
- Build prototypes to test risky or uncertain aspects (a prototype might take days to years)
- Document and directly teach technical approaches to Edyt Operations (which builds production software)
